Once your braces are in place, it is more important than ever that you continue to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Wires and brackets can cause food to become trapped in your mouth, which will result in dental issues if not taken care of.
At Trapnell Orthodontics, we feel it is important to provide our patients with the necessary knowledge to help keep their mouths happy and healthy. We will do our best to provide you with instructions for good hygiene during your orthodontic treatment.
Careful brushing and flossing remain two of the very best tools that can help you fight against tooth decay, and keep your standard of oral health high.
Some of the tools we suggest for maintaining good oral health during your orthodontic treatment are:
- Interdental Toothbrush | An interdental toothbrush (known as a Proxabrush) can be used to clean around and under your braces. Using a Proxabrush gently, you can avoid damaging the wires of your braces, and help keep your mouth clean. A Proxabrush is a wonderful tool that can truly help you keep your braces clean, and your teeth and gums healthy.
- Antibacterial Mouthwash | We offer a special hydrogen peroxide antiseptic mouth rinse called Peroxyl. Peroxyl can prevent infections and helps decrease the irritation that often comes with orthodontic treatment. Peroxyl can be used up to four times a day, based around when you are brushing (generally after meals, school, and before bed).
- Topical Fluoride | We offer a sodium fluoride gel called Phos-Flur that helps prevent tooth decay while you are wearing your braces. Phos-Flur kills bacteria and helps replace minerals in your teeth that have been exposed to harmful acids in your diet. Phos-Flur takes about 30 minutes each time you use it, and is an excellent option to help you keep your teeth healthy.
- Cleaning Your Removable Appliance | If you have a removable appliance (such as a retainer), we recommend that you clean your dental appliance as often as you would normally brush your teeth. We can provide you with instructions on how to best clean your appliance.
